As a social worker supporting the wellbeing of children, adolescents and their families, I am always looking for different, creative ways to facilitate this. I stumbled upon the HAPI drum after being introduced to it by a friend, and immediately believed it to be a great way of engaging children on an individual basis and within a group environment. I have since taken the HAPI drum into various rural and remote schools I visit, and have received really positive feedback from students and teaching staff. Words used by children to describe their experience of the HAPI are: calming, peaceful, good, happy, quiet, amazing. Classroom teaching staff at one school were amazing by how long the students engaged with the HAPI drum session (20 - 30mins). This was a significant achievement as they had not previously found an activity that created similar collective engagement and calm. This same school now has plans to introduce this more regularly into their classroom schedule.
